night flowers
the scent of promises
and dreams
hold your breath
the sunrise
evaporates
the magic
with the dew

I zoom
back
before everything changed
the world rushes up and
there
in morning shadows
our house
pausing
I look among the shades
to see
if our father
is in the yard
just before dawn
just before dawn
tiny tree frogs sing
songs of a larger life
as a rooster announces
the sun’s entrance
to the stars
I sit here
in the dark
wishing for a ladder
long enough to reach
the milky way
a wakeful night
