Roosters crow
in the bamboo trees
announcing that glint
of morning
creeping slowly
across the sky
“Another night conquered”
they call
with such roostery bravado that
the moon was seen to wink
as she pulled her cloudy quilt
and snuggled into bed.

White Bird
White bird
you fly in
on a chance breeze
and stand in haughty
silence
on the cattle backs
but we know you
waiting for a meal
elegant beggars
are beggars still
incense
there was incense in the air
sandalwood incense
calling me
calling me
back to the sacred
to the moon
and nights among the stars
calling me
to the place of burning
and heart’s desire
to that naked dance
of fierce freedom
and exploding joy
calling me
to journey back
and find what was lost
sandalwood incense
drifting gently
to heal my heart
once me
this morning
after a dreaming in
moonlit blues
the world emerges
hard and crisp
cuts open my cocoon
of comfort
and deposits me among the chaos
the eaters and the slayers
I smile
watching the frenzy
for all that grasping-snabbling
they miss
and end up
holding a wisp of air
that once me
who now
has gone beyond their reach
stranger dreams
In the quiet dark
slipping toward a stranger dream
floating
drifting
settling
down
to the bottom
of the unrecognizable
landscape of my night
